50,000 words in 30 days! DAAAAAMMMMIIIITTTT!!!! Seriously? Yes, Virginia, seriously.
I am the founder and President of Write or Die.
A small group of amateur writers set out to enhance our own skills while encouraging others.
We meet bi-weekly to share what we are working on and to have fun with the bi-weekly assignment. Usually the assignment is centered around the seasons; like My first day of school, assorted Halloween topics, Thankfulness/Gratitude/Ingratitude or All I Want For Christmas Is?…You get it. It’s just fluff. Empty headed superfluous babble to get the juices flowing and write something real.
Once, recently the assignment was 250 words or less. One of our group members, I’ll call her Irene (her trailer park name) to protect her identify, asked why the 250 words. She stated she was having trouble staying with that number. So, I told her, like my high school teacher once told us; A story should be like a woman’s skirt, short enough to be interesting, yet long enough to cover the subject. Word.
NaNoWriMo is the 50,000 words assignment. NaNoWriMo is a month long challenge/contest? to write a novel in 30 days. Yes! That’s 1,666.666666666 words per day if you are one of those anal retentive types. Raises hand. And yet, I haven’t met my mark due to vacation prep and life happening all over the place.
But I’m not stressed. I’ll catch up, today, I’m sure, since I’ll be held hostage in a 10’ U-haul trailer for a 5 hour drive down to the coast for a bike rally. Life, aka rain, has modified the plan somewhat, but we’re adapting. The trailer will get us there and we will ride back. And I’ll get my write in. So, it has worked out like it should.
Write Or Die.
50,000 words with only 46,315 to go. Hey! I’ve got 26 days left to do it in. I’m good.
